I would like to nominate my planting partner Andrew “Duck Lake” Urton for the tree planters hall of fame.
Last season, or maybe the season before, Andrew and I set out to plant 10,000 trees in a single day. The land was sandy mounds for 7 cents and we were to plant in the very bottom. This means that for ten thousand times we had to reach below the ground line – 5 inches below our feet. We planted from 4:30 in the morning until 9:30 at night. I was able to pound in 8763 trees and Andrew hit over 10k, I believe it was 10,873. The two of us combined nearly planted 20,000 trees in a single day. As this was day two of three day shift we also planted the next day. That was terrible, but our foreman found us a nice small direct block where we could take it a little bit easier. We both were very hurt on the two days off that followed when we moved camps.
